The Dish Trail Reminds You It's Still a Valley

The Dish Trail Reminds You It's Still a Valley

3.7-mile loop through the Stanford foothills off Alpine Road. The walk every Palo Alto resident takes when they need to remember that Silicon Valley is, underneath the code, still a valley with hills and grass and sky.

The 150-foot radio telescope — the "Dish" — is a Cold War-era satellite antenna that points at the sky with the intensity of something still listening. It's weirdly beautiful against brown grass and blue sky. From the high point, the whole Santa Clara Valley spreads below: Stanford's terra cotta roofs, salt ponds of the Bay shining pink and silver, East Bay hills across the water.

Spring turns the hills bright green and covers them in wildflowers. Summer browns everything but the sunsets are longer. The trail is fully exposed — no shade, bring water and sunscreen. Opens at sunrise, closes at sunset, enforced by Stanford land management with quiet firmness.
