Stanford Dish at Sunrise
Stanford Dish at Sunrise
The Dish trail at sunrise is a different experience than an afternoon walk. The parking lot off Junipero Serra Boulevard is almost empty. The grass is wet. The radio telescope catches the first sun and throws a gleam that looks like a signal to somewhere.
The loop climbs through the foothills, and at dawn the brown California hills go gold in stages — first the ridgeline, then the slopes, then the valley below as the light spills downward. Poppies and lupine in spring. Pale-green barley in summer. The Bay appears as a ribbon of blue that seems almost shy from this height.
Deer sometimes emerge from the thickets at the last switchback and watch the hikers pass with the calm curiosity of animals who own the morning. The whole thing takes about an hour. Bring water, a light layer for the wind at the ridge. Weekend mornings fill fast — go early or go on a Tuesday.
